About

John Foster

John Foster is an attorney shaped by service, resilience, and long-term public commitment. He grew up on military bases in California, Hawaii, and Virginia, where constant movement instilled discipline and adaptability. His father was a decorated Marine Corps officer, and his mother was an English immigrant and former war refugee who rebuilt her life in the United States. Their experiences shaped his belief that steadiness, clarity, and integrity are the most important qualities in leadership.

He studied History and Foreign Affairs at the University of Virginia and earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. He began his legal career in private practice as a Senior Attorney, developing a strong foundation in careful preparation and sound judgment. He later transitioned to public service, serving as Assistant County Attorney for Fairfax County and subsequently as City Attorney for the City of Falls Church.

Since 2013, John has served as General Counsel for Fairfax County Public Schools, where he emphasizes clear decision-making, practical solutions, and consistent leadership across one of the largest school systems in the United States. He also serves on the Virginia State Bar Council and holds an AV (preeminent) rating from Martindale-Hubbell.

Outside of his professional work, John is a long-distance cyclist who enjoys exploring rural and remote areas on gravel and mountain trails.
